Finishing Twin I Beam Suspension on Our 1000cc Mini Trophy Truck | 12" of travel!

We finish building the twin traction beam (or twin I beam) front suspension for our 1000cc mini trophy truck build. We used long travel shocks we found online for $50 each, they were originally meant to be used as helper springs. The coil over shocks themselves have 10 inches of travel, but we have about 12 inches of travel considering how we set up the suspension. This custom build homemade front suspension looks great, now all we need is steering and we should find out if it works well!

You guys are doing an awesome job but I have 1 thing I just want to make sure you’ve taking into account...when you go over bumps or corner hard you’re going to get huge changes in camber on the front which will cause similar problems to what the Chevy Corvair which the older models had a massive problem with especially in the rear end

Looking good. Just a thought, but it would be nice to have a mounting system for the shock angles to be adjustable. At least the top mounts. Similar to a r/c car. 👍

Thanks for the honest content guys. Best way to learn new things is to bite the bullet and go for it. You will make mistakes. You will spend unnecessary money, but there is a lesson to be extracted from each little mistake made in the shop. I can relate to what you guys go through as your skill sets increase with time and experience. About ten years ago, I decided to build a tube chassis rock bouncer from scratch. I had a little bit of fabrication experience, but nothing could have prepared me for doing it besides just getting out in the shop and disregard the idea of failure. Several builds later and it’s hard to quantify all of the odd little pieces of useful knowledge I’ve obtained little by little, system by system, processes, geometry and engineering, and even learning what tools can be of lower quality versus what tools need be of a certain quality (doesn’t everyone try to skimp on buying a tubing bender at first!?). Sorry to wax poetic. I really enjoy the channel guys. Thank you both.

You have your shocks upside down, flip them so the coil and shaft is down.

Not blind leading. Ike has a mechanical brain. Even if he doesn't know exactly how it works. He can figure it out, or at least make it work. He understands the basics and that goes a LONG way.

Check red beard garages page they drilled some shocks out and changed the oil. Very similar to the set you have. They made them serviceable.

The lower shock mount might be a problem. A lot of leverage on a long bolt through an arm weakened by drilling a large hole in it. Maybe a welded mount/box the inside of lower arm?

If you ever want torque use a Honda goldwing GL1100i engine. It's simular to a Subaru boxer 4 cylinder just a little smaller. It would fit great in the tight spaces you all get into. Nice video guys.

protip: you're installing your shocks upside-down. The cylinder contains the oil that the piston needs.The shocks last ten times longer if they're installed rightside-up :}
