Building a 1000cc Mini Trophy Truck Pt. 4

CarsandCameras

8 ամիս առաջ

Today we build and mount rear control arms for the Trophy Kart, as well as mock up rear coil over suspension! We try to use coil overs from a 2007 Mazda Miata- the spring rate is pretty good, but we only manage seven inches of suspension travel between full droop and full compression, which isn't good enough for our goal of minimum eight inches. We order some new shocks that have 10" of travel, which means we can easily get 12"+ of travel at the wheel out of them!
Thanks for Watching!

I say do what you feel you need to do as long as you're happy with doing it. Everyone starts out small and builds their way up. Upgrading your shop and tools isnt a bad thing. And you can still do everything DIY and budget friendly to help your viewers.

Go DIY in a bigger building so filming can be done easier. Everything can still be done on the cheap so we can copy, but done in a better lit roomier location. While a fancy bench like Greg and Lonnie is nice, but not all of us have one. The rest of us are building off of blocks and saw horses.

I dont know if you will see this because of the time lapse between when the show first aired and todays date, but Ill speak my peace any way. You asked about what to do about getting a bigger shop, by all means yes. Just because you have a bigger shop does not mean you have to change the way you do things. But any time you have the chance to grow and get better, you need to grab that opportunity and run with it. Having a bigger shop, with better tools will only make your projects better. Im sure that part of your ultimate vision is not to be stuck in a tiny shop for the next 20 years. Remember, this is your gig and you can do it the way you want to. The viewers will not stop watching because you have better tools, they should be inspired to get better things of their own. Im a bit older than you guys, but only because I was born sooner. By that I mean Ill never grow up to the point that I dont want to jump on a cross kart or something like that and just hammer on it like a red headed step child. Keep up the great work, you guys are blessed with the talent. So when you get the chance, yes!! Get a bigger shop. It will just mean better projects.

You guys are growing a builder and i think you guys have hit your limit on what 2 guys can do in a shop with simple tools. Getting a bigger place and better tools does not change what you are doing on this channel it only improves it. So please i think and Im sure most of you viewers think as well we would love to see what you guys could do with some upgrades. Cant wait to see what the future has in store for you and your channel!!!!! Dont worry it will be fine lolz

Do not change a thing about yalls selves, all us gear heads work off a budget. As for the building size and equipment, that is yalls preference, I say if you got the cheddar then make a sammich, i would do a 40x70, project space, storage space, work space, tool space, equipment space, it all adds up, your 30foot wall will end up like 26 and your 50 foot wall will end up about a 39, I'm talking workspace area, I am assuming you will U shape your shop like most and have middle doors for acces,, my point being a carpenter and a gearhead, space is taken away easier than given back. Go for a 50x70 or 40x70. My bad for rambling with useless knowledge

Anyone who wants to tinker and do builds like these can easily take the skills you guys show and adapt them to their own situation. Id say go as big as you can and get the nicest tools your finances will allow. If someone watches you building a frame on a table they can take the tips and tricks and do it on their saw horses easy enough. Its a cool progression from your dads garage to your own cars and customs play land to a nice big building. Why limit yourselves?

You could just pull struts off a vehicle with more travel like a Tacoma front then angle it and mount where you need for the travel. This way you could mount close towards the rear on the arms and angle up towards the rear of the passenger area. Better loading and travel all around with much better spring weights then a Miata lol. If you really want to cheap out and get it usable just pick up air shocks. I think factory Tacoma front struts with extended shocks mounted in them would likely be the cheapest way to get close to the proper travel and spring rates.

Dude every person on this planet wants nicer things go for themselves. It doesn’t matter if you have nice tools or crappy ones, where there is a will there is a way. Its all about what you want in life. Anyone who want to hold you down from wanting to better yourself and your skills isn’t a real fan. There are a lot of keyboard warriors out there, don’t pay them any mind. Build yourself the shop you want with the tools you want/need and roll on, you’re cheating yourself and Ike by holding yourself back for your viewers. All you have to do is every once in a while go back to your roots and do a DIY project, otherwise build the craziest stuff you can. I’d bet money that you’ll be surprised how many fans you’ll pick up the wilder your builds get. I like the more complicated stuff, it gives us something to strive for. GO FOR IT, DON’T HOLD BACK 1oz!

Dont have a cutting saw? heres how you make your spinning wheel of death work as one! you can have a nice shop and still be DIY. Most ppl dont have a tube bender but then again you can buy prebent tube. just keep what your doing practical and youll be good

I think that the budget DIY builds are what makes Cars and Cameras the great channel it is, but I say that if you want to build a bigger shop with more tools, then go for it! I personally don't know how I would live without my 40 by 75 foot shop, but I use it for storage as well. I guess that a bigger shop would give you guys some storage space for your builds too. I also think that you can still do small builds in a big shop. Just because you have a nice welding table doesn't mean you can't do builds on the floor every once in a while.

Just my opinion, having a larger space doesn’t mean you can still be DIY “it’ll be fine”. Having more space in order to be safe, keeping the materials and older projects out of the elements and allowing you to upgrade certain tools is all part of growing. I’ve been watching CAF for years and watching Mark go from a trash can in the driveway to a 3 station profesional router table has been fun.

simple is fun and thrash. but reality is you guys could make some killers rides with better equipment. its a balance thing. better equipment bigger shop yet diy friendly. better welder is more safety then anything. you need storage and a place that is semi flat to work on. build yourself a mini frame machine. show everyone how you did yours. make it adjustable so you can work on alot of different things on it. it needs to be flexile and movable as well. have an ability to balance it.

come on guys your building s trophy kart or truck using Miata shocks i mean even the real trophy karts are using REAL DEAL mini OFFROAD shocks .In off roading theres just some things you need no matter how much on the cheap side you want and can go you can't move forward with out the shocks you could prob get away with not wanting to spend the money and finding alternative ways and parts for every other part of the build except for good shocks i mean it could be done with out them but i feel like the word trophy will no longer be the suitable name for the project. I mean i dont know anyone that doesn't want to save cash but theres just some things that we need to brake bread for

I say, go pro. You can ALWAYS refer new people to your channel to watch to your earlier videos for hardcore DIY. Keep your Playlists organized so a new viewer can jump into a series and easily enjoy it. I feel it's more important that you accomplish the greatest amount of work in the least amount of time. That will make future vids more interesting (because more is getting done with better equipment), and since you'll accomplish more in less real-life time, it will allow you to edit your vids and present more "lets see if this works" content (fail/success) in each episode, as opposed to spending a lot of your real-life time getting a little bit done (due to organizational challenges), then feeling pressure to fill the vid with some fluff (welding, wrenching, etc) to get a 20 - 30 minute vid finished and published. It will also give you the opportunity to encourage other similar content providers by showing "this is where we started, this is where we're at, and you can do this too!" Everybody loves a good sport! On the down side of my suggestion, it'll take time to get a new shop squared away (not to mention the expense). I'd suggest you use a Fast Forward video feature to cover "lotsa time, squished into these itty-bitty bits of viewer time". As an example, I'd suggest watching 2 vids of Glock9's Apocalypse series (it's a 7 Days to Die "zombie killer" gaming series, but there's a lot of "grind" in the game that's squished into easily manageable bits for the viewer). He does an excellent job with the editing. Another content provider near your wheelhouse worth viewing is Alec Steele (a young blacksmith from England) who set up his shop here in Montana/USA. He also uses the "fast speed/quick cuts" editing to manage the viewer's time investment. (See Alec Steele: Making a Viking Sword

Hey bud just tossing this out there after seeing you ask for input today, but no offense there's thousands of videos of guys with huge shops, fab tables, welding jigs, and equipment I will never waste my money on as a backyard enthusiast building projects and I always get bored watching someone constantly boasting a 4,000 dollar weld table their sponsor gave em and usually end up closing the video and moving on. But with that said I completely understand getting a more comfortable work area with more space. Just don't lose that everyday DIY guy attitude because most people will never get that deep involved to want to watch how a cnc pipe bender works, or a cnc plasma table. Love your builds like this trophy truck because I can relate to this it's exactly how I have built every one of my projects over the years (as there's been quite a few lol) and enjoyed the simpler methods than I ever did building race quality chassis and setups for teams to race on tracks. Keep up the fun videos guys it's nice to watch.

If you're in a position to be able to build a larger shop and get better equipment...go for it!!! With a bigger shop it allows the space to do whatever you like. If you and Ike want to build hi-tech you can. If you want to build old school, just use a smaller portion of the shop and select the basic tools to get'er done. It opens up your possibilities to grow and be more creative, while still allowing you to build how you want. You guys will still be who everyone tunes into to see what you're going to come up with next! Go for it if the opportunity is there!

If you want/need a bigger shop, and have the means, then do it. But thinks like a welding table, rather than buy it, build one. It hold more true to the diy concept that all diy people want to improve. Show them how on a budget. The shop is just space. But tools and how you use that space from a diy perspective would be the ticket.

Idk if you guys will see this, but I say use the old garage but maybe invest in upgrading it so you dont have to undergo the process of getting a new shop with brand new equipment. You can expand the old garage, get new tools, and do whatever else for cheaper than a professional shop. Dont get me wrong, a pro shop would be great, but I think keeping that garage is everything. It inspires us to go in our own garages and build karts too. Heck, you could even put a nice asphalt track in the yard if you want. But keep the garage and spend money on it, I think itll be a good investment. Cheers.

I dont think a flat welding table or more space makes it any less "DIY". It's the tools you use to get there that the average Joe may not have. Like the tubing benders, notchers etc..... as long as ya'll keep the same mentality about your projects then it'll be fine.

Going to a 30x50 shop does not dictate that you have to use frame jigs and professional equipment. I have a 30x50 metal shop building that is the single best purchase I have ever made. I have a two post lift and an 80gal dual stage compressor, but above that I only have homeowner level equipment. I would suggest looking into a 30x50 (or bigger - not smaller) metal building cost. It would be well worth the investment if for no other reason than extra room. When Mustie1 went from his home shop to his professional shop it was a big change, and not one I liked at first. However, not that he has more professional level tools I can really appreciate the content he is creating. People are always afraid of change - but it usually ends up being a good thing. Go for it! Just don't forget your roots.
